“We are expecting three very tough days”
Teenager Archie Carter makes his first Unicorns Championship appearance of the season for Berkshire when they face Devon at Falkland CC (Newbury) in a three-day game starting this Sunday, August 5th, at 11am.
The 17-year-old Wokingham and Middlesex 2nds batsman takes over from Richard Morris, who is unable to play due to work commitments.
In addition to Morris, Euan Woods is not available and is replaced by Datchet spinner Ollie Birts, who for the past month has been playing regularly for the MCC Young Cricketers in their matches against the 2nd XIs of first-class counties.
Henley fast bowler Tom Nugent returns after work commitments prevented him playing in the three previous Championship fixtures. Despite his absence, Berkshire won all the matches and sit 18 points clear at the top of the Western Division, looking warm favourites to retain the title.
Devon, surprisingly, are still seeking their first championship win of the season following a draw and two defeats, but as Berkshire head coach Tom Lambert points out - "they are still a very strong side and we are expecting a very tough three days."
It was Devon who knocked holders Berkshire out of the Unicorns Trophy in June and have now gone on to reach the final, playing Cheshire at Wormsley on Wednesday, August 29th. On the previous Sunday (26th) the West Countrymen will be Berkshire opponents in the semi-finals of the MCCA's new T20 competition, also at Wormsley.
On the subject of T20 matches, Berkshire and Finchampstead captain Dan Lincoln produced an astonishing innings when playing for Middlesex 2nds against Club Cricket Conference at Enfield last Tuesday.
He smashed 121 not out off just 40 balls with 11 6s and 10 4s.
This took Middx to 202-1 in 13.3 overs as they replied to CCC's total of 200-7, which included 15 runs from Berkshire team-mate Waqas Hussain.
